Some Hypnotherapy FAQs

Will I still be in control of myself?

Yes you will. If you submit to the relaxation of hypnosis and enter into trance, you will still be conscious, aware and fully in control but your conscious mind will be extremely relaxed.

Will I be surrendering my free will if I go into a trance state?

No. When you are in a hypnotic or trance state you are actually more aware and more focused on yourself than you are normally. You are in full possession of all your senses throughout the hypnotherapy session and you are not under a “spell” or the control of someone else. You will not do anything under hypnosis that you wouldn’t do under any other circumstances.

Can I be hypnotised without my consent?

No one can hypnotise you without your consent. Hypnosis is a state of very deep relaxation. If you don’t want to be hypnotised, then you won’t be able to relax and you won’t enter into a state of trance.

The process of entering a hypnotic state takes time to allow your body and mind to reach the deep relaxation that is necessary for trance. You can stop the hypnosis session at any point during that process if you are not comfortable or if you decide you don’t want to be hypnotised. Hypnotherapists do not use "rapid induction" as you will see with stage hypnotists.

What happens if I can’t come out of trance?

It’s impossible for that to happen because you are not unconscious at any point. Although you will be in a deeply relaxed state, you will still be fully conscious and you can come out of trance at any time that you want to. You can also come out of hypnosis when given a verbal cue by the hypnotherapist.

Sometimes you may not want to come out of a trance, because the relaxed state you are in feels so good! When that happens it may take you a few minutes to return to your normal awareness but that is only because you want to stay in the relaxed state, not because you are being forced to stay in it or because you can’t come out of it on your own. You are always in control, even when you are deep in a hypnotic state.

Can I hypnotise myself?

Yes, you can hypnotise yourself! All hypnosis is actually a form of self-hypnosis as you are in control of what you are doing. We provide an audio recording using a hypnotic language pattern for you to listen to regularly and you will find that the more you practise, the faster and easier entering into a state of deep relaxation will become.

Does hypnosis work on children?

Yes, hypnotherapy is often used to treat children and works well with behavioural disorders, anxiety, phobias - including school phobia, night terrors, sleep disturbances and many other issues.

Is hypnosis real?

Hypnotherapy is a long-standing therapeutic technique that has been used with proven success to treat both physical and mental health issues in millions of people globally. Hypnosis techniques are based on the latest neuro-science research and are evidence-based.

Can I be treated for different problems at the same time?

You can if your issues are related - which is often the case. For example, a common fear for people wishing to stop smoking is that they will gain weight - this concern would be addressed and incorporated into the quit smoking session.

However, because hypnosis requires a complete focus of attention, it is much more effective to concentrate on one problem at a time if your issues are separate from each other.

How many sessions will I need?

This really depends on your particular issue. The virtual gastric band is 'installed' in one session, smoking cessation is also usually done in one session - for these issues we provide you with an audio download that you can listen to as much as required to reinforce your motivation.

Anxiety related conditions may take around 6 sessions but can be more or less as every client is unique.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Hypnotherapy is perfectly safe - you are always conscious and in control. Unlike drug therapies, hypnosis has no possible side effects, the trance state is extremely enjoyable and in the majority of cases have a very positive outcome.
